How the rounding calculator works

Rounding keeps a number to a chosen place and adjusts the last kept digit based on the digits dropped. The usual school rule, round half up, rounds 5 and above up: 2.675 to two decimals is 2.68.

Other rules exist for ties (exactly 5 followed by zeros): half down, half away from or toward zero, and half to even (banker's rounding, used by many spreadsheets and IEEE 754), which rounds 2.5 to 2 and 3.5 to 4 so errors cancel out. Ceiling always rounds up, floor always down, and truncate just cuts the digits off.

Significant figures count from the first nonzero digit, so 0.004567 to 3 significant figures is 0.00457. This calculator works on the decimal digits you type, so it never suffers from binary floating-point surprises.
