BMI is a screening measure for adults. It doesn't tell fat from muscle, so athletes can score high while being healthy. It's not a diagnosis.

How the bmi calculator works
BMI (body mass index) is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. In US units it's 703 × pounds divided by inches squared. The World Health Organization calls 18.5 to 24.9 normal, 25 to 29.9 overweight and 30 or more obese.
BMI Prime is your BMI divided by 25, the top of the normal range, so 1.10 means 10% over it. The ponderal index divides by height cubed instead, which suits very tall and very short people a little better.
BMI can't see body composition: muscular people read high and older adults with little muscle can read low. For ages 2 to 19 it has to be compared with age and sex percentiles on CDC growth charts rather than the adult bands.
