How the fraction calculator works

To add or subtract fractions, the calculator finds the least common denominator (LCD), rewrites both fractions over it, then adds or subtracts the numerators. To multiply, it multiplies the tops and the bottoms. To divide, it multiplies by the reciprocal (the second fraction flipped).

Every answer is reduced to lowest terms by dividing the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor (GCD), and shown as a mixed number and a decimal too. Mixed numbers like 2 1/3 are first turned into improper fractions: (2 × 3 + 1)/3 = 7/3.

The math is exact with numbers of any size, so fractions with huge numerators and denominators work. Decimal to fraction also handles repeating decimals: type 0.1(6) for 0.1666...
