How the pregnancy calculator works
Pregnancy is dated from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP), about two weeks before conception, and lasts 280 days (40 weeks) on average. That's Naegele's rule: due date = LMP + 280 days, shifted by your cycle length minus 28 days if your cycles are longer or shorter.
From an ultrasound, the pregnancy start is the scan date minus the gestational age measured at the scan. From a conception date it's conception minus 14 days, and for IVF it's the transfer date minus the embryo's age (3, 5 or 6 days) minus 14 days.
The first trimester runs to 13 weeks 6 days, the second from 14 to 27 weeks, and the third from 28 weeks to birth.
