How the income tax calculator works

Federal income tax is progressive: each bracket's rate applies only to the income inside that bracket. We start from your income, subtract pre-tax deductions to get adjusted gross income, subtract the larger of your standard or itemized deduction, and run the rest through the 2026 brackets for your filing status.

Long-term capital gains and qualified dividends sit on top of ordinary income and are taxed at 0%, 15% or 20%. Credits such as the $2,200 Child Tax Credit then reduce the tax dollar for dollar; they phase out above $200,000 of income ($400,000 joint).

People 65 or older get an extra standard deduction plus the new senior deduction of up to $6,000 each (2025 to 2028), which phases out above $75,000 of income ($150,000 joint).
