How the retirement calculator works
Your retirement number is the lump sum that can fund your spending for every year of retirement. We take the income you want (a share of your pay at retirement, less Social Security or pension income), let it rise with inflation each year, and discount every year back to your retirement date at your investment return.
Your projected savings grow your current balance and your yearly savings (a share of a rising income) at the same return. The gap between the two is what extra saving has to cover.
The withdrawal tab runs the math the other way: it spends your projected savings down to zero at your life expectancy with inflation-adjusted withdrawals. A 4% first-year withdrawal is a common rule of thumb for a 30-year retirement.
