How the roth ira calculator works
Roth IRA contributions are made with after-tax money, and everything they earn can be withdrawn tax-free after age 59½ once the account is five years old. We compare that with investing the same after-tax dollars in a regular brokerage account, where returns are taxed each year.
For 2026 you can contribute up to $7,500 ($8,600 if you are 50 or older), as long as you have at least that much earned income and your income is under the phase-out range.
