How the auto loan calculator works
The loan amount is the price minus cash incentives, down payment and trade-in value, plus anything still owed on the trade-in. If you include taxes and fees in the loan, they're added too; otherwise they're paid upfront.
The monthly payment uses the standard amortization formula with the rate divided by 12. The Monthly payment tab runs it backwards to find the most you can pay for a car with a given monthly budget.
Sales tax is applied to the price minus the trade-in, the rule in most US states.
