How the auto lease calculator works
A lease payment pays for the part of the car you use plus a finance charge. Depreciation = (capitalized cost - residual value) / months. The finance charge = (capitalized cost + residual value) × money factor. Sales tax is usually added to each payment.
The capitalized cost is the negotiated price plus fees, minus your down payment, incentives and trade-in equity. The money factor is the lease rate: multiply it by 2,400 to get an approximate APR.
The residual value is what the leasing company expects the car to be worth at the end, set as a percent of MSRP. A higher residual means a lower payment.
