How the sales tax calculator works
Sales tax is a percentage added at checkout: total = price × (1 + rate). To take tax back out of a total, divide by (1 + rate) rather than subtracting the rate, since the tax was charged on the lower pre-tax price.
US sales tax is set by states, counties and cities, so the rate varies by address. The state list uses each state's average combined state and local rate. Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax; Alaska has local taxes only.
