How the vat calculator works
Value added tax is charged as a percentage of the net price: gross = net × (1 + rate). To remove VAT from a gross price, divide by (1 + rate); subtracting the rate from the gross price gives the wrong answer because VAT was charged on the smaller net amount.
Standard rates include 20% in the UK and France, 19% in Germany, 21% in Spain and the Netherlands, 22% in Italy and 25% in Sweden and Denmark. Many countries also have reduced rates for food, books and other essentials.
