How the amortization calculator works
Amortization spreads a loan into equal payments. Each month, interest is the balance times the monthly rate; the rest of the payment reduces the balance. Early payments are mostly interest, later ones mostly principal.
Extra payments are applied straight to principal on the payment you choose, so every later month charges interest on a smaller balance. The schedule shows how much sooner the loan ends and how much interest you avoid.
