How the ira calculator works
A traditional IRA contribution is tax-deductible now and taxed when you withdraw. A Roth IRA contribution is taxed now and withdrawn tax-free. With the same tax rate now and later, both end up the same; the account that wins is the one that taxes you at the lower rate.
To compare fairly, we start from the same pre-tax dollars. The traditional IRA invests all of it and pays tax at your retirement rate at the end. The Roth and a taxable account invest what is left after today's tax, and the taxable account also pays tax on its returns each year.
