How the take-home pay calculator works
Your paycheck starts from gross pay. 401(k) and other pre-tax deductions come out first, which lowers the income that federal and most state income taxes apply to. Health insurance and HSA deductions also avoid Social Security and Medicare tax; 401(k) contributions do not.
Federal income tax uses the 2026 brackets and standard deduction for your filing status, with the Child Tax Credit. Social Security takes 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 and Medicare 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages above $200,000 ($250,000 joint).
State income tax uses each state's brackets or flat rate for 2026 and its standard deduction or exemptions. Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming have no tax on wages.
