How the long division calculator works
Long division repeats four steps: divide, multiply, subtract and bring down. Take the first digits of the dividend that the divisor fits into, write how many times it fits above them, multiply that digit by the divisor, subtract, then bring down the next digit and repeat.
In remainder mode the answer is a whole-number quotient plus what's left over (the remainder), which is always smaller than the divisor. In decimal mode the calculator keeps going past the decimal point by bringing down zeros, up to the number of places you choose.
Decimal dividends and divisors are handled by multiplying both by the same power of 10 first, which doesn't change the answer: 12.5 ÷ 0.25 is the same as 1250 ÷ 25.
