How it was calculated
- Move the decimal point so one non-zero digit is left of it: 4.5678
- The point moved 5 places right, so the exponent is negative: 10⁻⁵

How the scientific notation calculator works
Scientific notation writes a number as a coefficient between 1 and 10 times a power of ten: 45,600 = 4.56 × 10⁴ and 0.00456 = 4.56 × 10⁻³. The exponent counts how many places the decimal point moved.
E notation is the same thing written for computers: 4.56e4. Engineering notation keeps the exponent a multiple of 3 (4.56 × 10³ becomes 45.6 × 10³), which lines up with prefixes like kilo, mega and milli.
To multiply, multiply the coefficients and add the exponents. To divide, divide the coefficients and subtract the exponents. To add or subtract, first rewrite both numbers with the same exponent. The math here is exact, and you can round the answer to any number of significant figures.
Using and checking your result
