Percent Error Calculator
How far a measured value is from the true value
Percent error
2.140673%
The measurement is below the true value.
- Absolute error |observed - true|
- 0.21
- Signed error (observed - true)
- -0.21
- Relative error
- 0.02140673
- Signed percent error
- -2.140673%
How it was calculated
- Percent error = |observed - true| / |true| × 100
- = |9.6 - 9.81| / |9.81| × 100
- = 0.21 / 9.81 × 100
- = 0.02140673 × 100 = 2.140673%

How the percent error calculator works
Percent error tells you how far a measured or estimated value is from the true or accepted value, as a percentage of the true value: |observed - true| / |true| × 100.
Most science classes use the absolute value, so percent error is never negative. The signed version keeps the sign, which tells you whether your measurement was too high (positive) or too low (negative).
