How the base64 encode decode calculator works

Base64 turns bytes into 64 safe text characters (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, + and /), 6 bits per character, so every 3 bytes become 4 characters. It's used to put binary data into email, JSON, data URLs and HTTP headers. It is an encoding, not encryption.

Text is first converted to UTF-8 bytes, so accents, emoji and non-Latin scripts round-trip correctly. The URL-safe variant (RFC 4648) swaps + and / for - and _ and usually drops the = padding.
