How the hex calculator works
Hexadecimal (base 16) uses the digits 0 to 9 and the letters A to F for the values 10 to 15. Each position is worth 16 times the one to its right, so 1A3F = 1×4096 + 10×256 + 3×16 + 15 = 6719.
Programmers use hex because one hex digit is exactly four binary bits, which makes memory addresses, color codes (#FF8800) and byte values short and easy to read.
To convert decimal to hex, divide by 16 repeatedly and read the remainders from bottom to top. Division here gives a whole-number quotient and a remainder. Numbers of any length work exactly.
