How the student loan calculator works
Student loans are repaid like any installment loan: payment = balance × r / (1 - (1 + r)^-n), with r the monthly rate. The standard federal plan is 10 years of fixed payments.
Unsubsidized loans build interest from the day they're paid out, including in school and the 6-month grace period. That interest is added to the balance (capitalized) when repayment starts. On subsidized loans the government covers interest while you're in school.
Extra payments cut the balance directly. Federal loans have no prepayment penalty.
