How the resistor calculator works

On a 4 band resistor the first two bands are digits, the third is the multiplier (a power of ten) and the fourth is the tolerance. 5 and 6 band resistors use three digit bands for more precision; the sixth band gives the temperature coefficient in ppm/K.

Colors map to digits 0 to 9 in rainbow order: black, brown, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, grey, white. Gold and silver as a multiplier mean × 0.1 and × 0.01; as a tolerance they mean ±5% and ±10%.

Resistors in series add: R = R1 + R2 + .... In parallel the reciprocals add: 1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + ..., so the total is always smaller than the smallest resistor.
