How the electricity calculator works

Energy (kWh) = watts × hours ÷ 1,000. Cost = kWh × your rate. A 1,500 W heater running 3 hours a day uses 4.5 kWh a day, about $0.79 at 17.5 cents per kWh.

The label wattage is the maximum. Appliances that cycle on and off (fridges, freezers, air conditioners) average much less over a day, so use their average draw or yearly kWh ÷ 8,760 hours.
