How the mileage calculator works

Reimbursement = miles driven × the rate per mile. The IRS sets a standard rate each year that covers gas, maintenance, insurance and depreciation. For 2026 it is 72.5 cents per mile for business, 20.5 cents for medical and qualifying moving, and 14 cents for charity.

Keep a log with the date, destination, purpose and miles for each trip. Commuting between home and a regular workplace doesn't count as business mileage.
