How the finance calculator works
Every time value of money problem uses one equation: PV × (1 + i)^N + PMT × ((1 + i)^N - 1) / i + FV = 0, where i is the interest rate per period. When payments are made at the beginning of each period, the payment term is multiplied by (1 + i).
Like a financial calculator, cash you pay out is negative and cash you receive is positive. A loan you take out is a positive PV (you receive it) with negative payments; a savings plan has a negative PV and negative deposits, with a positive FV at the end.
N, PV, PMT and FV have direct formulas. The interest rate has none, so it is found numerically to many decimals.
