Total surface area

314.15926536 m²

Exact: 100π m²

Volume
523.5987756 m³

How it was calculated

  1. A = 4 × π × r²
  2. A = 4 × π × 5² = 4 × π × 25
  3. A = 100π = 314.15926536 m²

How the surface area calculator works

Surface area is the total area of all the outside faces of a solid, in square units. It's what you'd need to paint or wrap the shape. Flat-faced solids add up their faces (a box is 2(lw + lh + wh), a cube 6a²).

Round solids use their curved-area formulas: sphere 4πr², cylinder 2πr² + 2πrh, cone πr² + πrs where s is the slant height √(r² + h²). Where it helps, the result also breaks the total into lateral (side) and base areas.

An ellipsoid's surface has no exact elementary formula, so it uses Knud Thomsen's approximation, accurate to about 1%.
