How the molecular weight calculator works
Molecular weight (molar mass) is the sum of the atomic weights of every atom in the formula. For water, H2O = 2 × 1.008 + 15.999 = 18.015 g/mol.
Numbers after a symbol count atoms; a number after a closing parenthesis multiplies everything inside, so Ca(OH)2 has two O and two H. A hydrate like CuSO4·5H2O adds five whole water molecules.
The mass percent of each element is its total mass divided by the molar mass. One mole of a substance contains 6.022 × 10²³ formula units (Avogadro's number).
