How the ip subnet calculator works

A CIDR prefix like /24 says how many leading bits of the address identify the network. The subnet mask has those bits set to 1; ANDing the IP with the mask gives the network address, and setting the remaining host bits to 1 gives the broadcast address.

A /n IPv4 subnet has 2^(32 - n) addresses. Two are reserved (network and broadcast), so a /24 has 256 addresses and 254 usable hosts. The wildcard mask is the inverse of the subnet mask, used in router ACLs.
