How the interest calculator works
Interest is credited every month at the rate that matches your compounding choice: an annual rate compounded c times a year becomes (1 + r/c)^(c/12) - 1 per month. Each month's interest earns interest from then on.
Contributions are added at the start or end of each period. The annual contribution arrives once a year; the monthly one every month. Tax, if you enter a rate, is taken from the interest as it's earned.
Buying power divides the ending balance by the growth in prices: balance / (1 + inflation)^years. It shows what the money would buy in today's dollars.
