How the inflation calculator works

The Consumer Price Index (CPI-U) tracks what a typical basket of goods and services costs in US cities. To compare dollars across years, multiply the amount by the ratio of the two years' index values.

The flat-rate tabs assume the same inflation rate every year, which is handy for projections: the Federal Reserve targets about 2% a year, and the long-run US average since 1913 is a little over 3%.
