Tons are US short tons (2,000 lb) in US units. Add 5 to 10% for compaction.
How it was calculated
- Volume = area × depth = 18.581 m² × 0.102 m = 1.888 m³
- Weight = volume × density = 1.888 × 1,682 kg/m³ = 3,175 kg

How the gravel calculator works
Volume = area × depth. Gravel is often sold by weight, so the volume is multiplied by the density: typical gravel weighs about 105 lb per cubic foot, or around 1.4 tons per cubic yard.
A driveway usually needs 4 to 6 inches over a compacted base; a garden path 2 to 3 inches. Compaction settles loose gravel, so order a little extra.
