How it was calculated
- 120 = 2³ × 3 × 5
- Number of factors = (3 + 1) × (1 + 1) × (1 + 1) = 16
- Test divisors from 1 up to √120 ≈ 10.9545; each one d gives the pair d × (120 / d).

How the factor calculator works
A factor (or divisor) of a number divides it exactly, with no remainder. Factors come in pairs that multiply to the number: 120 = 1 × 120 = 2 × 60 = 3 × 40, and so on.
You only need to test divisors up to the square root, because the partner of each small factor is the large one. From the prime factorization p^a × q^b × ..., the number of factors is (a + 1)(b + 1)...
A number with exactly two factors (1 and itself) is prime. Negative numbers have the same factors with either sign.
