How the mutual fund calculator works
A front-end load is taken from each purchase before it is invested, a back-end (deferred) load is taken when you sell, and the expense ratio is deducted from the fund's assets every year. All three reduce the money that compounds for you.
The total cost compares your result with the same investments earning the same return with no fees at all. Over long periods the expense ratio usually costs the most because it is charged every year on a growing balance.
