How the matrix calculator works

Enter matrix A and matrix B, choose their sizes, then pick an operation. Results update as you type. Cells accept whole numbers, decimals and fractions like 2/3, and all the arithmetic is exact, so an inverse shows 1/3 rather than 0.333333.

A + B and A − B need matrices of the same size. A × B needs A's column count to match B's row count, and the result has A's rows and B's columns. Matrix multiplication isn't commutative, so B × A is usually different.

The determinant, inverse and powers need a square matrix. A matrix has an inverse only when its determinant isn't 0. The rank is the number of pivots in the reduced row echelon form (RREF), found with Gauss-Jordan elimination.
