Book depreciation. Declining balance methods switch to writing off the rest in the final year so the asset ends at its salvage value. US tax depreciation uses MACRS tables, which differ.

How the depreciation calculator works

Straight line spreads the cost minus salvage value evenly: (cost - salvage) / life each year. Declining balance charges a fixed rate on the remaining book value, so depreciation is highest early on; double declining uses twice the straight-line rate (2 / life).

Sum of the years' digits is also front-loaded but gentler: year k gets (life - k + 1) / (1 + 2 + ... + life) of the depreciable amount. If the asset starts partway through a year, the first year gets a partial share and the schedule runs into one extra year.
