Not medical advice or a diagnosis. Anorexia is diagnosed by a clinician from eating behavior and health, not BMI alone, and it can be serious at any weight. If you're worried about yourself or someone else, please talk to a doctor. In the US, the ANAD helpline is 1-888-375-7767; in a crisis call or text 988.

How the anorexic bmi calculator works
The DSM-5 grades the severity of anorexia nervosa in adults by BMI: mild 17 or more, moderate 16 to 16.99, severe 15 to 15.99 and extreme below 15. These bands only describe severity once a clinician has made a diagnosis.
A low BMI on its own isn't a diagnosis; some people are naturally slim. Equally, eating disorders can be serious at any weight, so behavior and wellbeing matter more than the number. For under 18s, BMI-for-age percentiles are used instead.
