How the sleep calculator works

Sleep runs in cycles of roughly 90 minutes, from light sleep to deep sleep to REM. Waking at the end of a cycle usually feels easier than waking in deep sleep.

The calculator counts back (or forward) in 90-minute steps from your time, adding the time it takes you to fall asleep. Most adults need 5 or 6 cycles, which is 7.5 to 9 hours.
