How it was calculated

  1. c = √(a² + b²) = 5
  2. α = arctan(a / b) = 36.86989765°, β = 90° - α = 53.13010235°
  3. Area = a × b / 2 = 6

How the right triangle calculator works

A right triangle has one 90° angle, two legs (a and b) and a hypotenuse (c). Any two independent values fix the whole triangle: two sides, a side and an angle, or combinations with the area, perimeter or the height to the hypotenuse.

The tools are the Pythagorean theorem (a² + b² = c²), the trig ratios (sin α = a / c, cos α = b / c, tan α = a / b), the area a × b / 2 and the height h = a × b / c. Two angles alone only fix the shape, not the size, so at least one length is needed.
