How the rent calculator works
The classic guideline is to spend no more than 30% of your gross (pre-tax) income on rent. The calculator also keeps rent plus your other debt payments under 36% of income, so existing debts lower the answer.
Many landlords check the same thing from their side: they want your yearly income to be about 40 times the monthly rent.
In expensive cities people often spend more than 30%. That can work, but it leaves less for savings and surprises.
