How the day of the week calculator works

The weekday comes from the Gregorian calendar, which repeats every 400 years. The worked steps use Zeller's congruence, a formula that turns the day, month and year into a number from 0 (Saturday) to 6 (Friday).

Dates before the Gregorian calendar was adopted (1582 in much of Europe, 1752 in Britain and its colonies) are shown in the proleptic Gregorian calendar, so they may differ from historical records.
