Brands and fitters vary. Many modern fitters use the under-bust as the band (this calculator); the old +4 inch method gives a bigger band and smaller cup.
How it was calculated
- Band: under-bust 31 in, rounded to the nearest whole inch and up to an even number = 32
- Cup: bust 36 in - band 32 = 4 in → 4 in = D
- EU: band 32 → 70 (5 cm per band step), cup D → D

How the bra size calculator works
Band size comes from the under-bust measurement, rounded to an even number of inches in US and UK sizing. EU bands step by 5 cm for every 2-inch band (UK 32 = EU 70, 34 = 75, 36 = 80).
Cup size comes from the difference between bust and band: each inch adds a cup in US/UK sizing (1 in = A, 2 in = B, 3 in = C...), and cup letters split after D: the UK uses DD, E, F, FF, the US often DD, DDD, G, and EU sizing runs straight on with E, F, G, H.
French and Spanish bands are the EU band plus 15; Australian bands are the UK band minus 22.
