How the army body fat calculator works

Since June 2023 the Army measures body fat with a single tape around the abdomen at the navel, replacing the older neck-and-waist (and hip, for women) method. The formulas are: men, -26.97 - 0.12 × weight + 1.99 × abdomen; women, -9.15 - 0.015 × weight + 1.27 × abdomen, with weight in pounds and abdomen in inches.

The abdomen is the average of three measurements rounded to the nearest half inch, and weight is rounded to the nearest pound. Soldiers who exceed the height and weight screening table are taped and must meet the body fat maximum for their age group.
